Famous luggage brands

Although mainly used only during travelling and transporting things, designer luggage is fast gaining popularity among the younger generation for its reliability, durability and most importantly, brand recognition. Some famous designer luggage brands are viewed as status symbols, while some famous fashion lines are even expanding into the luggage and baggage industry to take advantage of this blurring of borders between functional luggage and high fashion. Luggage bags nowadays tend to mirror the class of a person, matching the style of their owners and seemingly telling a story about their backgrounds or origins.

One of the most illustrious brands in the luggage industry is none other than Samsonite, which advertises that its luggage is actually ‘Strong Enough to Stand On’. Started by an enterprising young man named Jesse Scwayder around the year 1910 in the USA, Samsonite has almost a century of experience behind them in the luggage and suitcase industry, which is reflected in their many accolades and awards accumulated over the years. Due to its strong brand name and recognition, Samsonite has more recently branched out in to manufacturing other items such as small bags, backpacks, laptop cases and even leather products.

Another famous brand that still rings bells among luggage aficionados is American Tourister, which despite its seemingly patriotic name, was founded by an immigrant to the United States in the 1930’s. The founder, Sol Koffler, was determined to produce luggage priced at $1 in the midst of the Great Depression, and finally succeeded, with his products having even better quality than other more expensive competitors. American Tourister is most famous for its iconic branding advertisement which features a gorilla pounding one of their bright red hard cases, throwing it all around an enclosure, jumping on it, and finally dragging it out the back door, with no noticeable damage done to the case at all, giving rise to its catchy tagline ‘Tough Suitcases for a Tough World’. Unfortunately, the company failed to maintain a profit throughout the years, and was eventually sold to the Samsonite Corporation, becoming a low-end version of its’ sister brand.

Tumi, Inc is another famous manufacturer ofsuitcasesandtravel luggage, and is based inNew Jersey, USA. The company is named after a Peruvianceremonial knife generallyused for sacrifices, the company’s founder having spent a couple of years in Peru during a stint in the Peace Corps. One of Tumi's most iconic products is their black-on-blackballistic nylon suitcases, which are both lightweight and durable.Ever the innovative company, Tumi teamed up with a designer to produce the PowerPack Backpack, which incorporates solar technology for charging cell phones andPDAs.Tumi also puts a metal plate with a unique 20-digit registration number in each and every one of its bags. Once they purchase one of Tumi’s prioducts, customers can register for the Tumi Tracer program and have their contact information entered into a central database so they can be reunited with their bag if it is found
